I began composing in 1980, and my writing has evolved over the decades. Each era held events that shaped my musical style, and that’s how I will present it here—by decade.
In early 1980, I had only a limited understanding of music, but that quickly changed. From 1980 to 1984, I studied jazz guitar and composition at the Neupauer Conservatory of Music, composition under Dr. William Shimmel and guitar under Tom Glenn, an experience that gave me a much deeper musical foundation. Around 1984, I began studying privately with Pat Martino, a mentorship that lasted several years and greatly influenced my development. Later I studied with guitarist Steve Giordano with a focus on performance. These years marked the beginning of my performing career and development of a personal performing style
In the 1990s, I moved to California, where I met many of the musicians I still collaborate with today. In 1995, I formed the jazz trio On The Mile with Martin Torres on bass and Marshall Gentry on drums—a group that profoundly shaped my composing and playing. The following year, I began writing music for the television show Guiding Light, and that work was honored with multiple Emmy Awards for composition. During this decade, I met my wife Debbie, whose presence has been a major influence on my creative life.
During the 2000s, I remained active as a composer and performer, while also focusing on recording solo guitar CDs. Though I remained active musically, this was my least prolific decade. The majority of my musical output was dedicated to performing and teaching which I still do today.
The 2010s brought a collaboration with Tom Glenn, my close friend and former teacher from the Neupauer Conservatory Of Music. Together, we recorded four CDs and performed at the Falmouth Jazz Festival in New England for three consecutive years, as well as at numerous venues in Cape Cod, Philadelphia and Southern California. Tom passed away in 2025.
In 2017, I joined the band RedShift, marking a new chapter that extended into the 2020s. Much of my composing during this period focused on creating material for the band, making it my most prolific and creatively fulfilling era to date. During the COVID lockdown, I launched the “Quarantine 2020” project—a weekly series in which I recorded in studio video performances of my original music. These videos can be seen on my YouTube Channel.
I invite you to explore the music below. Follow the links for sheet music, recordings and video performances.
