Dividing a beat into three equal parts gives us a triplet. A common way to count triplets is: ONE-trip-let, TWO-trip-let, THREE-trip-let, FOUR-trip-let
Understanding triplets comes from being able to transition smoothly between regular 4/4 rhythms and triplets—and back. This helps internalize the feel and ensures you’re staying locked in with the meter.
In the first example we move from Quarter Notes to Eighth Note Triplets to Quarter Note Triplets. When playing Quarter Note Triplets you are essentially playing every other Eighth Note Triplet. The remaining examples explore every possible combination.
