This exercise was inspired by something I saw guitarist Paul Gilbert demonstrate. His focus was on the final line of this exercise, showcasing a burst of speed and precision. In my view, however, proper preparation is needed:
- The first line, paced in quarter notes, sets the meter and establishes control.
- The second line introduces triplets, allowing you to develop right-hand balance, evenness, and picking speed.
- By the time you reach the third line—Gilbert’s speed picking phrase—you’ve built a solid rhythmic and technical foundation.
