Nine Songs (solos)

As part of my approach to developing improvisational skills, I often record myself soloing over a tune and then transcribe what I played. That’s exactly what I’ve done with these nine solos. I chose each song not only for its chord progression but also for the sheer joy of playing it.

The principles behind these solos are explained in the lessons throughout this site. Above all, I always aim to be as melodic as possible—never lose sight of that.

I encourage you to begin by internalizing each song—both the melody and the chord changes. Once you’ve reached that point, play through my solos and analyze the content. After that, take the next step: improvise your own solos and transcribe them. The potential for self-discovery through this process is enormous.
