Major Scale

A basic understanding of how the major scale is constructed serves as a foundation for more advanced music theory. The essential concept is recognizing the pattern of whole steps and half steps that make up the scale. By understanding where the half steps fall, you can apply this pattern starting from any note to build a major scale. Page two will lead to an understanding of the circle of fifths. Notice that as you add sharps the keys move a fifth while adding flats move by a fourth.
