I developed this line study to approach improvisation from two perspectives. I have always found that if you approach improvising from the perspective of rhythm lines will be easier to develop therefore the primary approach here is using a preset rhythm. The secondary approach is to focus on various common chord progressions meant to build a foundation for chord progression found in jazz standards.
- #1-4 focus on Major and Minor keys via 2 5 1 in 4/4 and 3/4 time
- #5 combines those 2 5 1’s into a cycle progression
- #6 addresses the “Dominant Two” chord
- #7 deals with the four and minor four
- #8 addresses the “Dominant Four”
- #9 is rhythmically varied and uses blues characteristics over a common chord progression
