This exercise focuses on improvising within a I–vi–ii–V progression, with an emphasis on starting your phrases before the bar line. On page two, we shift attention to ending phrases in different parts of the bar. This rhythmic focus encourages a way of thinking that’s often overlooked in improvisation. We can become so concerned with playing the “right” notes that we neglect the rhythmic placement and shape of our lines—both of which are crucial to developing a strong, musical statement.
