For beginning readers, I use two distinct approaches depending on the student’s age and experience. With young students, open position notes and simple songs are effective and engaging. For older or more experienced players, it’s generally more beneficial to begin in fifth position. Without open strings, it becomes easier to shift and expand into other positions. Focusing on one string at a time and keeping rhythms simple helps make the learning process smooth and accessible.
