Cut Time

This simple exercise is designed to help you understand how to count and execute rhythms in Cut Time. The importance of Cut Time is profound, especially when playing at faster tempos. Regardless of whether it’s indicated on the page, I often default to Cut Time because it provides a more relaxed overall feel. In essence, you’re working half as hard.

For example, playing a Samba in 4/4 at a brisk tempo can be exhausting—even a single chorus can feel overwhelming. But interpreting the same tempo in Cut Time allows for a much more relaxed and sustainable performance.

Another key benefit is that Cut Time reduces the number of downbeats by half, which decreases the likelihood of misreading rhythms by 50%.

In swing settings, Cut Time emphasizes beats 2 and 4, aligning with the traditional jazz feel. In contrast, Latin grooves often emphasize beats 1 and 3. At extremely fast swing tempos, it can even be helpful to shift your feel to 1 and 3 for better control.
