This exercise focuses on moving the pick across adjacent strings with attention to pick direction and string placement. When you start with a down-pick, the pick begins outside the string pair and when you start with an up-pick, the pick begins inside the strings. By using a 7/8 meter we introduce an odd number of notes per phrase, causing the starting pick direction to alternate each measure. Using meter in this way, to force patterns allows to overcome unusual groupings.
