Chords In Major

These pages explore the chords in the key of G major with an emphasis on functional harmony. We begin by assigning Roman numerals to each chord, a system that not only clarifies each chord’s role within the key but also allows for easy transposition to any major key—since all major keys share the same functional relationships.

Next, I list some of the most commonly found chord sequences. Once you understand the basic function of these chords, you can begin to explore substitutions—such as tritone subs, diminished passing chords, the minor iv, etc.

As a follow-up, I recommend analyzing songs and identifying these common functional patterns. This practice will deepen your understanding of how songs are constructed, improve your ability to memorize them, and enhance your improvisational skills.
