I wrote this line as a tool for building vocabulary over dominant chords. The tonality is rooted in a pure dominant sound (Mixolydian mode), with added minor 3rds to capture a blues flavor, and chromatic movement to suggest a bebop sensibility. One of the challenges with extended lines is sustaining interest across multiple phrases—especially when playing over a static harmony.
As you practice and internalize this line, I encourage you to write your own—both over this chord and other dominant chords. My approach to writing it this context is to allow myself to improvise and write it down a bar or two at a time. This method is a great way to access, understand and increase your vocabulary.
