Static

“Static” was most likely written in 1989 while I was living in New Jersey. I clearly remember where I was when I composed it. At the time, I owned and operated a picture frame shop. One day, I took a blank piece of paper, drew lines to create staff paper, and sat in the back of the store to write the melody.

Later on, I arranged the piece for performance and added a solo section. The original version included chord changes, but I eventually removed them. My vision for the song was to have the guitar and bass play the melody in unison, without any chords.

The band On The Mile performed “Static” during the 1990s. In 2016, I created a new arrangement for piano and guitar.
