In 1984 the melody for “Joy” originated in as a composition assignment from a lesson with Pat Martino. Using a method of assigning numbers to notes, I generated a series of pitches that formed the basis for the piece. The result was a surprisingly pleasant jazz waltz. The tune later resurfaced during a collaboration with Tom Glenn, and we recorded it for our 2013 CD Continuum.
