Different Lines

“Different Lines,” written on November 25, 1996, was the first of many songs I composed for my wife, Debbie. The chord progression reflects some of my favorite sequences, moving through the cycle with tritone substitutions and subtle modulations. The melody often divides the bar, creating two-against-three polyrhythms. A shift to the subdominant (F major 9) brings a sense of lift and brightness before the piece settles into a vamping final eight bars.

This song has appeared and reappeared over the years, including as the title track for the 1999 On The Mile CD, and later as a track on the Goodis & Glenn debut CD Jazz Dance.
