“Tyler’s Other Ride” grew out of a section from my earlier composition, Tyler’s Ride. The chords in the solo section felt especially compelling and sparked the creation of a completely new tune. In this piece, I emphasized syncopated triplets over an even 4/4 feel—a context in which a creative drummer can really shine. Tyler excels in that space, and his playing elevates the whole piece. To lean further into that rhythmic tension, I added a tutti section that gives the drummer another chance to fill the open spaces. With Redshift, we often performed these two songs back to back, creating a natural musical dialogue between them.
