Written in 2021 the “D” in “D-Time” stands for Dannie Hofmann, who plays saxophone for RedShift. The feel of this tune is built on a very tight and muted rhythm. The melody is both intervallic and polyrhythmic, yet retains a very melodic sound.
RedShift performed it regularly, and it quickly became a staple in our set. “D-Time” is another example of a modal composition that sounds completely natural despite its complexity. The harmonic texture centers around a blend of E♭ major 7 and D minor 7 chords, creating an E♭ Lydian flavor. Although the resolution ultimately is D minor, E♭ remains a strong destination throughout the tune.
