In 1984, toward the end of my time at the Neupauer Conservatory of Music, I began shifting my focus from composing jazz tunes to writing songs. The distinction, for me, was that jazz tunes are typically written to be performed on an instrument, while songs are crafted with a more lyrical, vocal sensibility—even when no lyrics are present. By that time I was well-versed in the American Songbook, and its influence can be heard. Written into the core song is an intro and ending resulting in a completely arranged song. I performed it during my time at Neupauer, but it never made its way into my repertoire after that period.
