“1+1=3” was composed in April of 1993, a year after moving to California. In retrospect, the piece reflects the influence of Dave Brubeck, particularly his use of triple meter and polyrhythms—a hallmark of both his compositions and the playing style of his drummer, Paul Motian. The use of the Dorian mode, a staple of 1950s jazz, also shaped the piece. In the 1990s my band, “On The Mile,” featuring Martin Torres on bass and Marshall Gentry on drums, performed it regularly.
