Sykes

“Sykes” was written for Steve Sykes on March 20, 2001. I met Steve a few years earlier when he became the second drummer for On The Mile, replacing Marshall Gentry, who left the band in 1999 to join the Air Force. Marshall left big shoes to fill, and Steve was more than ready to step in. He brought a wealth of experience, along with exceptional musical and artistic ability, that deeply enriched the band.

Sadly, we lost Steve to cancer a few years later. I have so many fond memories of performing with him—he elevated every musical setting he was a part of and was a dear friend.

The song reflects a Hard Bop style, which is ideal for a drummer to showcase their expressive range. In 2011, I recorded “Sykes” with Tom Glenn for our album Jazz Dance.
