One morning in May of 2022, I reflected on my composing and realized I hadn’t written a ballad in quite some time. That moment led to the creation of “Quietly Sleeping,” a piece that explores some of my favorite musical elements—particularly modality and the use of space. In retrospect, I can hear the influence of composers like Wayne Shorter, Kenny Wheeler, Pat Martino, and Ralph Towner. RedShift performed the song many times.
